In Season Two you'll follow Jonas, a sound engineer from Hamburg who rents an apartment in the same building, as his late mother's letters about a piano-playing man from 1988 lead him to the warm family downstairs, and to a secret one of them has kept for thirty-four years.

What learners say
Reviews from learners across Languages on Fire courses.
“A year ago I bought Languages on Fire's German full deck and completed it over 3 months. That gave me a great start and a solid base. I've continued learning German by reading and doing 1-on-1 classes on italki. The things I learned in LoF's German deck are still the strongest in my mind — I produce them automatically when I'm having a live conversation. I think what sets LoF's Anki decks apart is that they've developed a whole storyline. There's a ton of context. There are some other good decks on Anki but I haven't found any that give you so much context. Learning individual words or even individual unconnected sentences just isn't as powerful as following a story.”
“I used language on fire decks to revise my German and liked it so much that I decided to put my trust in them to learn a new language and bought the Russian deck. It is a much more effective way to learn that all the subscription based apps that I tried and the way the content is laid out just makes sense.”

“I've never seen any other Anki cards that even come close to these! Truly professional and carefully thought out. It's helped me tremendously!”

“LoF is an exceptionally good course for a quick dive into German. Overall, I'd highly recommend LoF.”

What learners say
Frequently asked
Is this a full course or just flashcards?
It's a complete, dialog-driven course. You follow two seasons of story through the conversations of one cast, on a structured path from A1 toward B2, delivered as an Anki deck so you get the power of spaced repetition.
Which one should I buy?
If you're starting from zero, or your French tops out somewhere around A2, start with Season One or get both seasons at once. Season Two assumes you're comfortable at B1. It opens with a new main character, Jonas, but Gilbert and Orla from Season One are still around, so it works on its own and as a continuation.
Can I start with Season One and add Season Two later?
Yes. Season Two is sold on its own, so you can buy it when you get near the end of Season One. Both seasons use the same deck name in Anki, so Season Two lands right next to the lessons you've already done.
Should I buy this deck or the French in Action deck?
It depends on how you like to learn. This deck works on its own: the story, the pictures and the audio all live inside Anki, so you don't need anything else. If you want an Anki-only course, it's the better choice.
Our French in Action deck is built around the French in Action video series, Robert and Mireille's story in Paris, with audio recorded by native speakers. If you enjoy that series and want to watch it alongside your reviews, choose that one.
You can also use both, at the same time or one after the other. They tell different stories, so the words you know come back to you in new situations.
Why shouldn't I use another free Anki deck?
You can, and a few of them are decent. The differences that matter are structure and context. Most free decks are word lists or unconnected sentences, put together from whatever the author had on hand. This course follows a storyline, so every sentence arrives in a scene you can picture, with the same characters and the same voices each time, and the vocabulary is built on the 2,000 most frequent French words. If you want to see it for yourself first, the free version on AnkiWeb has the first three lessons.
Shouldn't I simply create my own deck?
You could, and if you enjoy building decks it's a good exercise. It's worth knowing what it costs first. You'd be writing two seasons of dialog, deciding what order to teach the grammar in, writing the translations and notes, and producing audio and a picture for every line. That's months of work before you learn anything. We built this so that time goes into studying French instead.
I've never used Anki before. Is this for me?
Absolutely. Anki is a free, straightforward flashcard app (a small one-time fee on iPhone), and we show you exactly how to set it up and import your course in minutes.
How long does it take to finish?
That's up to you, because Anki lets you choose how many new cards you see each day. With this deck, 50 new cards a day is a realistic pace (the next question explains why), and at that pace you'd finish Season One in about four months and both seasons in about seven. Anki's default of 20 a day is gentler and takes about a year and a half for both. Nothing expires, so there's no wrong pace.
Isn't 10,000 cards too much?
It sounds like a lot, but the number overstates the work. Every sentence from the dialogs is also broken down into vocabulary cards, so the same material reaches you on several cards. Cloze and multiple-choice cards then go over it again. Most of what's on a new card is something you've already met.
That's why you can move through this deck faster than most: fifty new cards a day is a realistic pace here, where with other decks it would quickly pile up.
What will I be able to do at the end?
After Season One you'll know the 1,000 most frequent French words and be comfortable with the grammar up to B1: enough to hold a conversation with a native speaker about your life, your plans and what happened last weekend.
Season Two is about understanding French more deeply. It takes you to the 2,000 most frequent words and toward B2, where you follow conversations at a natural pace, pick up what people imply as well as what they say, and see why a sentence is built the way it is.
It isn't exam preparation, though. The course builds the language itself rather than exam technique, so if you need to pass a formal DELF exam you'll most likely want some targeted practice on top.
What's included?
The season you choose, or both, plus the Study Playbook (PDF), for one payment. You keep lifetime access, including every update to the deck.
I used the free AnkiWeb version. Will my progress carry over?
Yes. When you download the full course, it updates your existing deck and adds the remaining lessons. All of your learning progress is kept.
Can I edit the cards?
Yes, the cards are fully customizable. Add, change, or remove anything to tailor the course to your goals.
Is it a one-time payment? What about refunds?
One payment, lifetime access, and all future updates included. You're also covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee.
